Lyme Disease

16th Sept 2010

Lyme disease is on the increase in North Yorkshire. For those of you who are unaware of what the disease is or how it is spread, read on......

A tick attached to skin.

Lyme disease causes the spine and the nerves around it to swell, making the poor soul who contracts it paralaysed for life. It is transmitted via ticks which attach themselves to unprotected skin especially when walking through long grass or undergrowth. Obviously the nature of field archery leaves us all open to this potentially devasting disease. However with simple precautions it can be avoided.

These are; Wear long trousers and shirt sleeves when in the wood. Tuck trousers into socks or wear wellington boots. Check for ticks after every shoot - they start off the size of a poppy seed and steadily grow as they suck your blood! If you do find a tick on your skin, remove it using a pair of tweezers. If in doubt go and see your doctor.

Thanks to Stonebow Field Archers for alerting us this problem and allowing us to use the above information from their website. More detailed information on Lyme Disease and how to safely remove ticks can be found at lymediseaseaction.org.uk
